The number of students participating differed betwween 20
and 55.
62 boys took part and 80 girls.
Ages differed between 11 and 18.
10 teachers were involved in the project.Subjects involved were:
Swedish, English, French, Geography, Art, Visual Art, Social Sciences and Computing.
Time used varied starting from September and ending in January.
Most schools used 1-2 h/week and the Finnish school 5h/week for a shorter period of time.
Changes from the original plan: The English teacher in Terrassa
decided not to participate, the weekly contacts between both teachers and students did
,for various reasons, not work as planned and no chatting took place.
What worked out well: Some of the groups were motivated and worked
well, the group doing the filming (Sweden,Finland), Spanish-Italian contacts, The process
in itself was interesting.
What did not work: The contacts between both teachers and students,
little interest among other teachers, technical problems, access to computers, changes of
groups.
Other problems: Funding in Italy, Internet connections, the lack of
video equipment.
The students´opinions: Personal contacts motivating, international
contacts a change, a European dimension, gave responsibility, different ways of working
from ordinary schoolwork, motivating, student exchanges would really motivate.
Contacts and how to improve them: personal e-mail or fax, continuous
contacts should be checked by teachers so that they really write. Contacts should be more
frequent. Chatting could be arranged.
Extra work for students: Some did the work well others complained.
No video was done by November 15th. Spain and Germany finish theirs before the end of
February, Italy will not make one and Sweden and Finland have theirs ready.
Eugenia did not receive the results for the web page by January 17th. Results to be
sent within the next few days.
The results were presented to other students in different ways, not yet in Finland.
Participating teachers and students are willing to find material for another
participating school if asked for it.
Students interested in continuing contacts should give name and interests to be sent to
participating schools within the next week. That way them may find suitable partners.
SUGGESTIONS FOR A CONTINUATION OF THE PROJECT
Age groups: 11-13 (I), 16-18 (Sp), 18, 11-12 (G), 15-16 (S), 16-17 (SF)
Apart from English some groups could use French and German.
The autumn term should be used for the project.
Questions to concentrate on could be geography, traditions, customs, music, school,
sparetime, that is everyday life, and find similarities and differences.
The results should be put on a web page and the results ready by the end of January 2000.
