Schermbeck is a small town with about 14000 inhabitants in the Borough of Wesel not
far from the Ruhr area. Wesel lies on the Rhine and is about 15 kilometres away. There is
a motorway so that all the cities on the Ruhr can be reached easily. Thus the number of
people from the Ruhr area who visit Schermbeck at weekends and during the holidays is
rather high. With ist forests and meadows Schermbeck is a popular place for recreation
especially due to its variety of sporting activities. The path in the forests offer riding
facilities, cycle paths, tennis courts, sports grounds, an indoor swimmingpool and gyms
offer different activities. In the surrounding area Schermbeck is popular as a nice place
for shopping.
The name "Schermbeck" was first mentioned in 799, so next year the 1200th
anniversary will be celebrated. Amongst other old buildings there is an old castle of the
13th century.
