Patron Saint of lovers - January 25th

DwynwenDwynwen was the daughter of Brychan Brycheiniog. Brychan held a feast in his court one night and Dwynwen, her sister and brother were allowed to go to the feast
Everyone wore their best clothes and went to the hall to feast and dance. At the feast a young prince called Maelon saw Dwynwen and fell in love with her. Dwynwen also fell in love with Maelon.
Maelon asked Bryghan if he could marry Dwynwen. Unfortunately, Brychan did not like Maelon and told him that he refused his consent.
Maelon told Dwynwen about her father's refusal.Maelon wanted Dwynwen to run away with him to his court.Dwynwen refused saying they had to be married first
Maelon was very cross and left never to return.
Dwynwen was very sad and could not contain her grief. She went to the woods to console herself. There she fell asleep. In a dream an angel came to her and gave her a potion which would make here better. She also saw Maelon drinking the same potion and he instantly turned into a block of ice.
The angel granted Dwynwen three wishes
Dwynwen's first wish was that Maelon was turned back into a man
Her second wish was that she became the patron saint of lovers and her third wish was that she would never marry so that she could devot her life to God.
Her three wishes were granted
Dwynwen went all over Wales telling people about God.
One day she was sailing around the coast of Wales and landed on the island of Llanddwyn on off the isle of Anglesey. There she built a church .Many broken hearted women joined Dwynwen on Llanddwyn
In the 18th century mant made pilgrimages to Llanddwyn to drink the waters of the well and to pray
The ruins of the old church can be seen on Llanddwyn to-day and lovers still visit the to wish in the well
We send cards to our boyfriends on the 25th of January Saint Dwynwen's Day
