The
viticulture represents an ancient occupation on the territory of our country
and, in the past, it has been often associated with the fruit tree culture.
The vineyard is a southern / meridional plant, so you won’t find it on high
altitudes in our country. By way of exception, it grows at 600 m height, but it
prefers sunny sides. In winter, it has to be protected against the severe cold
by being buried.
In the climatic conditions offered by our country, the vineyard finds favourable
possibilities for growing ripe, thanks to the torrid, droughty summers, and, in
contradiction to the Mediterranean regions, you find here better conditions for
wine making, especially in the cold months of autumn which contribute to a
strong concentration of the wine.
The viticulture has a millenary tradition in Romania. The most famous hills
planted with vines are Cotnari, Iasi, Odobesti, Murfatlar.
At present, excepting the numerous industrial units of wine making which are
spread in almost all the vineyards in this country, there are also experimental
viticultural stations and combine groups of enterprises of vinification,
conservation and bottling.
However, in many farms/ house-holds, the traditional methods of wine making,
such as the wine press, are still in use. In order to obtain the juice of
grapes, the unfermented wine (must of grapes) people tread the grapes by working
the wine press.
