We live in a part of Croatia which is plain and fertile.
It is a part of the Panonian Plane and people have always worked on land.
The main agricultural products grown here are cereals, most of all wheat.
People work hard all year round and when summer comes, they hurry from early
morning till dark in evenings to pick up harvest. All the time they look up
at the sky fearing from rain and storm which might destroy everything they
were doing the whole year. When the harvest is over, people feel relief and
by the arrival of autumn the wheat is stored, ground and ready to feed the
family during the incoming winter.
To mark these events and to express thanks to God for good harvest, our
grandmother and mothers start making fresh bread, rolls and buns, cakes and
all sorts of bakery products. This turn into a traditional manifestation
which is held every year in every town or village, and every school
organizes exhibition in order to keep the tradition alive for the next
generations. It is called Dani kruha,
literally «The days of Bread», but they are very similar to the Thanksgiving
Days in other countries, referring only to bread. The bakery products of our
mothers are real art, it seems they compete in forms and taste and it’s a
real feast for our senses when we bring them to our school and make
exhibition.
Last year our school was preparing to take part in the final manifestation
in Daruvar, so we had to choose the most beautiful examples to be sent there
to represent our school. You must admit that it wasn't at all easy to decide
which would be picked up among these which were displayed in our school
hall. |
