The work in the vineyard traditionally begin on the 22nd of January, the St.
Vincent`s Day. The vine producers go to their vineyards regardless of the
weather conditions. He pours the dearest vine -stock with the old vine and prays;
Dragi Boze, cuvaj
trs moj,
Evo Ti zrelog
da bude dobra godina.
Oblake razmakni,
Sunce primakni,
Mraz zgoni
I na tucu zvoni.
Sv. Vincek, pokazi svijetu
Kako bude u novom ljetu. |

(Dear God, keep
watch of my vineyard.
I give you old one, let the new year be successful. Take away clouds and
frost, bring the sun, worn us of hail.
St. Vincent, show the world what will the new year be like.) |
Then he cuts the new bud of the wine and puts it in a glass
or vase with water, keeps it in warm and on daylight. Water should be changed
from time to time, and after two or three weeks the bud sprouts showing new
leaves and flower. That`s the way to see how the vine - stock survived winter,
and what kind cutting will apply.
It is said that it is not nice nor good to be alone on the St. Vincent` Day, so
he invites his friends and each of them gets a small twig from the vine - stock
to take it home for memory. That day the vine producers usually wish each other
happy and successful wine season.
