Every
village in Slavonia celebrates the day of patron Saint of that place. It is the
Saint who the church in the village is dedicated to. It is a holiday for all the
villagers.
Budrovci is a little village near Djakoo, and we celebrate the day of St.Nicolas,
th 6th of December. The celebration includes the holly mass that is attended by
the all members of the family. The priest preaches about the work and life of
the saint. We celebrate that holiday in our homes with great joy. We have luck
that the patron of our village is the most famous and beloved saint all over the
world. St. Nicolas was the patron of the poor, sailors and most of all children.
He shared all his property with those who didn`t have anything, but he didn`t
want them to feel uneasy for receiving gifts, so he managed to give them
presents secretly. Because of his kindness and godnees of his heart, our
villagers wrote a little poem for him.
Nikola svet, Nikola
slavni,
Biskupu svetom uzore davni,
Citava crkva stuje ti ime,
Istok I zapad dice se njime. |

We prepare for that day a week in advance, women bake cakes,
cook typical Slavonian dishes. We expect guests to come, so we clean the house
to welcome them. The more guests arrive, the greater honour the family receive.
That is the day when our relatives whom we haven`t seen for a long time come. We
go together to church and after the mass we buy something for ourselves on the
stalls in front of the church. The whole day the guests come and go. We expect
all our friend to come. We serve to our guests typical Slavonian dinner which
starts with chicken soup with famous home-made pasta. After that we serve boiled
meat with some sauce. The third dish is “sarma”, a dish of minced meat enrolled
in sauerkraut. The last course is baked pork. For desert we serve different
kinds of cakes. Slavonian women are really good at making cakes. They prepare
many different sorts of cakes. The greater number of cakes a woman makes, the
better cook she is considered. It is the custom that each guest brings home some
of the cakes for those members of his families who were not present in our home
