The Food we Eat in festival Days
Back Up Next

We celebrate different feasts in December. The most popular are Saint Nicolas Day on 6th December, Christmas on 25 th of December and New Year. For every feast we eat various food and what we enjoy most are our dinners.
24th December is a special day and everybody is a bit nervous because in the morning there are still some things to be done like final shopping of the goods we forgot about on previous days, some cooking still has to be done and then everybody is waiting for the Christmas dinner.

Christmas dinner:

As the starter Slovenians usually have beef soup with noodles or smoked ham.

As the main dish we have roast pork, boiled beef, roast potatoes, horse radish sauce and green salad

As the dessert we have »potica«- the so called German cake which could be filled with: walnuts, cinnamon and rarely with tarragon and different home made fancy biscuits.

We drink some good wine

New year’s eve dinner:

We usually have smoked, dry ham and home made sausages or home made salami with horse radish or French salad, cold roast pork, and different other salads. We usually drink good quality Slovenian wines but we usually toast to the new year with champagne- called Radgonska penina and we eat a lot of »potica« and other biscuits.

New year dinner:

The new year dinner is something special in our country as we spend all the previous night toasting to the new coming year and eating different delicious specialities and therefore we need a dish to sober us up and help us to get over the hangover.
We usually eat »sarma«, which is actually roll made from sour kraut leaves filled with rice and minced meat cooked in tomato sauce, with mashed potatoes or boiled potatoes.
