Christmas in the Latvia
Back Up Next

Christmas season is full of wonders and magic: it is farewell to darkness and troubles. People make masks and fancy costumes, tidy houses, bake, cook and roast. On Christmas day, as an old belief says, it is necessary to eat nine times- then the next year will be rich and happy. Every dish has its magic meaning.

Eat a big, round pancake
there fewer tears you will shed
Eat bean
will bring you health and strength
Eat fish
will bring you money
Eat originally pig`s sores
was green to ploughmen but nowadays the main course at Christmas a pig`s head.

Cakes, bread with hemp, honey, beer, baked turnip and gingerbread are all constituents of the holiday dinner. The tradition of Christmas masquerade has its magic meaning too.
Jolly, noisy people fancy dresses appear in the streets singing and dancing; they visit house by house. “Gypsies”, “animals”, “death”, “dead men” with drums, rattles and pigs make tremendous noise. Some people believe that in this way they drive out of their houses all sorts of troubles.
