Modern Biotechnology in Food
Back Home Up Next

Modern biotechnology - will touch the lives of most European by the close of the 20th century, whether in food, medicine or environmental protection - is the subject of lively and sometimes controversial debate throughout society. In common with many other major scientific and industrial advances, biotechnology raises a range of issues, such as safety, ethics and possible environmental impact.

Background Papers

This set of background papers is designed to encourage and contribute to this debate so that a consensus can be reached on responsible applications of biotechnology in food. It aims to help stimulate open discussion of this topic and, ultimately, to make informed public choices.

EUROPEAN FOOD INFORMATION COUNCIL

The European Food Information Council, EUFIC, is an independent, non-profit organisation which provides science-based information on food and food-related topics to the media, health and nutrition professionals, educators, and opinion leaders.

EUFIC acts as a vital link in the communication chain by channeling information gathered at the source - primarily from nutrition and food safety experts - through to the consumers.

EUFIC's mission is directly related to the increasing public demand for sound, balanced information on the nutritional quality and safety of foods.

EUFIC directs its resources towards three broad areas:

Safety and quality of food and food products

Nutrition, diet and health

Application of biotechnology in the food chain

EUFIC publishes a regular 4-page newsletter, FOOD TODAY, highlighting subjects of current interest. It also issues periodic reviews and leaflets on specific subjects (Food-borne Illnesses, 10 Tips for Healthy Eating, Carbohydrates and Nutrition, Food Additives, Understanding Obesity, etc.)

All material published by EUFIC is based on peer reviewed scientific surveys and research. A number of publications, which cover a broad spectrum of subjects, are produced jointly with national and international organisations, recognised for their expertise.

EUFIC's goal is to enhance the public's understanding of nutrition and food safety; thus raising consumers' awareness of the active role they play in safe food handling and choosing a well-balanced, healthy diet.

EUFIC maintains relations with a network of independent scientific experts, food company specialists, educators, government agencies and consumer organisations.

EUFIC is based in Paris and has national branches in a number of European countries. It is supported by leading food and beverage companies.
