Most of the
side effects of antidepressant medications are not diet related. However,
two possible side effects, constipation and dry mouth, can be alleviated
by some diet changes. If either of these side effects occur, talk to your
doctor first. It may be possible to change medication or the dosage. If
the problems continue, these suggestions may help.
For
constipation:
Eat more fiber and
increase water intake. If
the current diet is low in fiber, gradually increase fiber to 25-30 grams
per day. Gradual is a key word here. If too much is eaten suddenly,
digestive discomfort can be a problem. The other component of the
recommendation, water, is equally important. At least 6-8 glasses of water
or other hydrating fluids per day is the guideline. A glass should contain
8 ounces. If fiber is increased without adding fluids, constipation can
become worse.
For dry
mouth:
Try chewing sugar-free
gum, eating fresh fruits, and drinking lots of water.
