The Miraculous Draught of Fishes
Back Up Next

The Miraculous Draught of Fishes. There are two episodes in the New Testament with this subject. The first one is presented by St. Luke (5:1-11): Jesus climbed aboard Simon/Peter’s boat on the Sea of Galilee and preached to the fishermen. He then ordered Peter that his people should throw the nets overboard again after an unsuccessful night’s fishing. They did so and caught a lot of fish.
Another scene is described by St. John (21:1-8). After the Crucifixion, Simon/Peter returned to Galilee to his old trade. During the night he and his companions did not catch anything. In the morning they saw a man, who told them to cast their nets again; they did it and fetched the nets full of fish. John, who was on the boat with Peter, then recognized the man as Jesus and said, “It is the Lord”. Peter threw himself into the water to try to get Jesus.
