Balys Buracas
(1897-1972) got acquainted with Lithuanian folk art and customs from his early
childhood. In 1922 Buracas managed to acquire a teacher’s qualifications, but
sometimes he would entirely forget about his work and wander to places known to
him only taking photographs. Having given up teaching finally in 1928, for the
rest of his life Buracas devoted himself whole-heartedly to the local lore
study. Making good use of his camera he knew that it was the best way to
preserve the unique beauty of his country.
Buracas’ possessions -his negatives, pictures and notes -make a marvelous whole
which could be entitled The Memories of the Past Lithuanian Village in
Picture
