PJESMA O DUNJI I PTICI   THE POEM ABOUT QUINE AND A BIRD

Zrela,žuta, mirisava dunja
Na stablu visoku
Neotrgnuta ostala
Jesenas
I uvenula

Sa stabla mirisne dunje
Ptica
Odletjela preko voćnjaka
U šumu duboku, u šumu gustu, pustu

Ni dunje, ni ptice
Nema
Nema
Ni ptice, ni dunje.

Yellow quince full of odor was left on the tree this autumn and it withered.

From the quince tree a bird flew away over the orchard into the deep, thick, deserted forest.

There is no quince nor bird any more.}

The quince was left in the orchard, forgotten died out, the bird flew away into the unknown; neither of them was there. Just like a man who aimlessly wonders whole his life. When he looks around, there is nothing left, his aimless wondering was in wane, there is no trace of him or his wandering. He achieved nothing.

KLAS   SPIKE

Ja sam zreli
Klas u polju
Plavom, beskonačnom.
Napajahu me
Jutra kapljana
Rose od srebra svjetlosti.

Nježni me prsti
Vjetra milovali;
On mi govoraše:
Zri, samo zri.
I pobježe nenadano.

Moja se žuta glava
Izbezumljena,
Okretaše tražeć sunce
Da ga poljubi
U usta. U plamen. U žar.

Ali se ukaza
Ispred mene srp
Žetelice nasmijane:
Preteška se moja glava zanjiha
U naručju dobre sestrice
I nasmija se plavi mir.

I am the mature spike in the blue endless field. I was watered by the morning dew of silver light.

Gentle fingers of the wind touched me while he was talking to me: just grow up. Then he suddenly ran away.

My yellow head was turning around looking for sun to kiss his lips, his flame, and his fire.

But then I saw a sickle of the smiling girl-reaper in front of me, and my too heavy head twisted. Suddenly I was in the arms of a good sister and the blue peace smiled.}

The spike growing in the endless field enjoyed in the sun and the wind. It peacefully accomplished its life in the arms of girl-reaper becoming the food for the people. Symbolically a man finds his peace when he achieves his aims in life. He feels his task is finished and can peacefully die.

MOJA SESTRA NOSI U GRAD MLIJEKO   MY SISTER CARRIES MILK TO TOWN

Predjurarje. Ona ustaje
I oblači se u mraku ledene sobe
Ura na zidu tri puta zakašlja
Daleko je sivi grad, vani pada snijeg.

Oprezno silazi niza stepenice
Držeć u rukama kante mlijekom nalite
Zatim joj mati još jednu na glavu podigne:
Pripazi dobro da se ne oklizneš.

Škripi snijeg, škripi snijeg pod smrzlim opancima;
Ona se žuri da stigne zarana,
Da što prije započne s prodajom.

Sprva će nuditi mlijeko an uglovima ulica,
A kad se razdani sasvim, poći će u dvorišta gradska
Vičući: Gospojo, mlika! Gospojo, evo mlika!

She gets p before dawn and dresses up in darkness of cold room. The clock strikes three times, the gray city is far away and it is snowing.

She goes down the stairs carefully carrying pails of milk in her hands. Then our mother puts one more on her head and says: Be careful lest you slip.

The snow creaks under her frozen feet, she hurries to come and begin with selling as early as possible.

At first she'll offer milk at the corners of the streets, and when the day breaks, she'll enter into the yards shouting: Milk, lady, milk!}

Sister gets up early on winter mornings to go to town and sell it. She is too young but she carries heavy burden of pails full of milk in her hands and one more on her head. Milk means life for the family and it is very important to sell it. They don't take it for themselves because they need money for other necessities. He admires his mother and sister who get up early, before the rest of the family regardless to cold weather and winter
