| Still nature |
He was born in Slavonski Brod andbegan to study law in Zagreb,
but his love for painting was stronger so he attended private art school. He
spent some time in Munich where he attended drawing courses and finally he
entered the Academy of Art in 1906 becoming the member of the Munich group of
painters. After spending some time in Paris, he returned to Zagteb in1910 and
organized his first exhibition.
His first works were done during his education in Munich and they have the
characteristics of tradition, new modern academizm as well as special realizm.
He paints portraits, nudes, but he finds courage to createmore complecated
compostions. The complete synthesis of his talent and the Munich period is
present in his «Still nature» from1909.
During his staying in Paris he got to know the works of Cesanne and Manette
which influenced his painting.
1930s denote a new period of his work, colours became brighter and certain
amount of monumentalizm is present. This is the period when «Fisherman», «The
boy with the Corn», and «The peasants at Lunch» were painted. The war years
resulted in more work in studio than in the open, so still natures dominated and
he acquire the style which characterised his late period
