Chronological beginning of the 20th century painting in Croatia develops in a few courses at the same time. One of the strongest initiative powers bringing new ideas was the contrast between Munich and Paris, geting out of the circles of art idealism to art materialism breaking up with the Middle Age tradition and assuming the modern painting.

Coming to Zagreb Vlaho Bukovac became on e of the most important painters who owing to his art culture had the crucial role in defining Croatian painting. Coming back from Paris he brought fresh ideas of the painting atmosphere of the west. Painting in bright and clear colours, freshness in their using, easily giving shapes, all these are the main characteristics of the period.
