Ivan Generalić

Up Next

A naive painter from Hlebine. He was a farmer by profession and the central person in the Hlebine Painting School. His talent was dicovered in 1930 by K. Hegedušić who gave him instructions for further work. His early perod is characterized by socio-critical realizm which connected him with the programmed art of the group «Land». His work was the form of the plebian artistic expression. At the beginning he used the technique of oil on wood or canvas, but later he introduced another techique using tempera on glass.

After 1945 he paints mainly landscapes of the Podravina , scenes from the fields and still natures where the simplicity of forms and safe drawings prevail. He paid special attention to space and perspective, and colours are characterized by finest shading. Life in the village was still his favourite theme, but instead of expressing social emotion he turned to its idealization.
